CASE STUDY – DB8000 HYDROSPHERE – PML UK

About the project

Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), in partnership with the Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC), Plymouth, has acquire a new state-of-the-art buoy platform ; The buoy and any fixed moorings need to be well characterised in order to avoid any potential collisions and strong enough to withstand the elements.

Since 2010, PML have operated a highly successful scientific data buoy programme within the context of the Western Channel Observatory

PML acquire a new buoyed platform capable of continuing and enhancing existing oceanographic time series by adding additional functionality including an in-water profiling instrument package and the ability to “plug-in and play” a wide range of innovative marine technologies.

A major component of the MBTC project is to enhance and develop « Smart Sound Plymouth », an in-sea trials environment for new and innovative technologies.

This project boasts the year round deployment of two buoy systems at scientifically significant, long term monitoring and marine biodiversity reference sites (L4 and E1).

  • Station L4 is a coastal station approximately 6 nautical miles south of Plymouth
  • Station E1 is located in an open shelf environment approximately 20 nautical miles south of Plymouth.

L4 & E1 stations

These buoy platforms measure a wide range of atmospheric variables and a comprehensive suite of oceanographic surface measurements (sea temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll-a fluorescence, turbidity, CDOM and nitrate).

These measurements are made on an hourly time-scale and transmitted back to PML for processing and display on the WCO website (www.westernchannelobservatory.org.uk).

The L4 buoy which has provided excellent service for over 10 years in the field is replaced by the new buoy platform to  provide the necessary infrastructure for PML to make significant technical and scientific advancements at the L4 station.
